Most of us have experienced that moment that leaves us frustrated and on the outside of our home without the keys to getting inside. That moment you dipped your hands into your pocket for the key, but it was nowhere to be found! And unfortunately, the spare key was also not available. Do not get panicky because you don’t always need a key to open a door.
Here are some nifty little tricks or methods that come in handy for different situations.
The Screwdriver Door Opening Method
This method doesn’t require a complex process. A small or an eyeglass screwdriver can do the magic on doors with privacy handles and interior doors. Check out the hole on the doorknob and push the screwdriver right deep inside.
Then you have to gradually twist the screwdriver until the lock open. If the screwdriver is not available, you can use a small butter knife to open the door.
Pick the Lock
This works perfectly when you have a lock-picking set. However, most homeowners do not anticipate a lockout situation, so it’s rare to be found in their houses. But if you do have one, it will come in handy during lockout emergencies.
You can use an Allen wrench with an unbent paperclip to pick most locks. Push the Allen wrench in gently at the lower end of the keyhole, and also insert the paper clip. Apply pressure to turn it in the anti-clockwise direction for the lock to open.
Nevertheless, there are pick-resistant locks like the Mortise, Medeco, and the Schlage Primus. They are designed to use the second set of pins to make them almost impossible to pick. If you try and can’t succeed in picking the lock and you are in a hurry, then call an expert locksmith from Tampa Locksmith for help.
Use your Credit Card
Though this doesn’t seem to be right, you can use a credit card to open a locked door. This method can’t work with deadbolts because of their configuration, it can only be used for spring locks.
That said, we advise you to use an old or expired card – a bendable laminated card will be good for this because the card may be affected by the pressure. Ensure that the slant of the latch is facing you. Then put the card between the lock and door frame and try to forcefully bend it to push the lock into the door. Credit cards that are thick and sturdy will be more effective.
Lock bumping is literally a preferred method for unlocking traditional locks. This method is only effective with pin tumbler locks. You are required to get a bump key, insert it into the lock, and then strike with a mallet or other instrument.
Unfortunately, the lock bumping method raised security concerns in the past due to activities of burglars and many homeowners installed anti-bumping mechanisms. If the anti-bump features are not installed on your door, you should consider lock bumping for opening the lock without a key.
Drill out The Lock
Lock drilling will destroy the locking plug. This option should be your last resort and should be considered when you do not have access to a nearby locksmith. Remember, you will spend more money when the lock is destroyed. Therefore, calling experts from Tampa Locksmith, whenever you have a lock emergency is the real deal.
