How to Make Sure Your Garage is Secure?

Did you know that your garage is one of the most vulnerable points of entry into your home? Worse, the inside door that connects your garage to the rest of the house is often left unlocked. Thus, it is important to make sure your garage is secure. Luckily, there are a variety of ways to do this. At Tampa Locksmith, we have seen our share of garage vulnerabilities. Here are some ways to make your garage safe from intruders. If you have any specific questions, concerns, or requests, feel free to call Tampa Locksmith, your trusted locksmith in Tampa.

Make Sure Your Garage Door Is Sturdy

Garage doors are not indestructible. If your garage door is warped and does not provide a tight door seal, then it is that much easier for a burglar to break into your garage. Upgrade outdated, damaged, or flimsy garages to keep your garage secure and your curb appeal impressive.

Don’t Leave Valuables in Your Garage

This one is common sense. The garage is often synonymous with “storage room” where a homeowner tosses anything and everything they do not find storage room for in the house. This is fine but remember that the garage door is sometimes left open. Do not leave high value items in the garage.

Invest in Good Exterior Lighting

Would-be thieves and burglars generally strike during the night when it is dark, and they target houses with poor exterior lighting. Strategically place lighting around your property to ensure all entry points into your home are well-lit. Motion-sensor lighting is a cost-effective and efficient option to this end.

Upgrade Your Garage Door Opener

It should come as no surprise that old garage door openers are easier to hack into than newer models that use “rolling code” generators. There are stories about neighbors’ remotes accidentally opening each other’s garage doors with the same remote. Burglars use scanners to easily decode these older garage door openers’ access code. Rolling code generators create a new code every time the remote is pressed, keeping your garage secure.

Zip Tie Your Emergency Door Release

The emergency door release is a handy lever to open the garage door with when you experience a power outage. Unfortunately, burglars have found a way to exploit the feature. By creating a gap at the top of the garage door and reaching a clothes hanger through, they are able to hook the lever and open the garage door. A quick solution to this vulnerability is to secure the emergency door release with a zip tie.

Don’t Leave Your Garage Doors Open for Long

This is another commonsense tip. Leaving your garage door open for a long time while you are away is an open invitation for thieves to take off with some of your personal property. It is one thing to keep the door open while you are in the garage doing some work but another when you are nowhere around. Even if you believe you live in a safe neighborhood, it is better to be safe than to be sorry.
