So, why do keys break or get stuck inside the lock?

There are many reasons that will cause the key to get broken inside your lock. This ranges from using the wrong key, turning the key with force, to using a worn out key.
However, the fastest way to get out of this situation is to contact experienced experts from Tampa Locksmith. We have bonded and certified locksmith in Tampa FL that will arrive at your location as soon as we receive your call. But if you prefer the DIY option, below are the tested and trusted steps to take.

Apply a Lubricant

The first step is to apply a lubricant to the key-lock or keyway. While this isn’t mandatory, a lubricant will increase your success in removing the broken or stuck key. We recommend using a graphite spray lubricant. This lubricant will not “cake” or block the moving parts of the lock unlike WD-40 and others.
However, graphite can stain your hands and surrounding materials. So, users are advised to be very precise in the application. Accurately line the nozzle of the lock so it gets right inside the keyhole and have a rag or paper towel to wipe up any spills.

Hands-on Approach

This tried and true technique requires using your physical strength and power to bring out the broken key. It works best if the lock is jammed but the inner components can turn. Hold the door tight and begin to firmly jiggle the exposed portion of the key with the opposite side. You should do this gradually and listen for any cracking sound.

Use Tools to Remove the Key

If you cannot remove the broken key with your hands, then you need to use the right tools. Popular tools include needle nose pliers, metal hair clips, paper clips, tweezers, Bobby pins, safety pins, button pins, etc. Among the listed tools, pliers are the best. It grips the key firmly and removes it without much hustles.
While it is simple to remove the key from the exposed part using a plier, you can try other home tools like Bobby or safety pins, tweezers and others if the plier is not available.

Other Methods

Other methods that can help get you out of this frustrating situation is to tap the lock with a hammer or use super glue. However these methods are not ideal because of their drawbacks.
Super glue is not strong enough in removing a broken or stuck key and a hammer can damage the lock.
