How Locks and Keys Work

Yet, despite their common use, many people are unaware of how locks and keys really work. Have you ever been curious how your locks do their job? Read below to find out the fun and interesting details.

The Earliest Historic Examples of Locks

Many people assume that locks are a modern day invention. However, locks have been widely used throughout history. The earliest discovered lock and key style device was found amongst the ruins of Nineveh, the ancient capital of Assyria and one of the oldest cities in the world. Egyptians also used wooden locks. When a key was inserted into the wooden block, it would lift pins and allow the door to move. Remarkably, this is very similar to the method still used today.

How Modern Locks and Keys Work

The arrival of the Industrial Revolution bolstered the advancement of locks, contributing to the modern pin and tumbler lock system that is used extensively throughout the world in our current age. Inside the pin tumbler lock, there are a series of pins which are pushed downward, which keeps the plug from moving. If the corresponding key is inserted into the opening, the pins will align perfectly with the pattern of unique notches cut into the key. This allows the plug to rotate, thus unlocking the door. Romans were also a big fan of locks and used rings as keys so they could be held closely, even when traveling.

Alternative Variations of the Pin Tumbler Lock

The need for enhanced security measures, along with advancements in technology and manufacturing, have created interesting alternatives to traditional pin tumbler lock systems. While most varieties utilize a similar mechanism for unlocking them, there are slight alterations that can better suit different purposes. For instance, the wafer tumbler lock uses flat wafers rather than pins. Another popular example is the tubular lock, frequently found on mailboxes and ATMs. Rather than being placed horizontally like conventional locks, the pins are in a round configuration. These locks are more difficult to pick with novice tools and are often used for added security on locks found in areas of high public traffic.
