The Ancient Era of Keys

The earliest known key and lock date back more than 6000 years ago. This type of key was discovered in the ruins of Nineveh, a city of the ancient Assyrian empire, now modern-day Iraq and Syria. Both the key and lock are of wooden design. The key was made of wood and looked like a large toothbrush with pins on its end. The lock also had wooden pins that are lifted by the corresponding pins on the key. It can be said that these lock design became the model and early predecessor of the modern tumbler-pin lock.
The wooden toothbrush-like keys were not reliable and efficient enough as they can be unlocked using any standard key of the era. Also, they were cannot be controlled from both sides of the door.

The Roman Involvement in the Development of Keys

The Roman empire improved on the design of the original Egyptian lock and key. Instead of the wooden construction, the Romans used iron and brass for the lock and key respectively. Also, the Romans made the lock system resistant to brute force attacks and introduced wards into locks. The warded locks prevented incorrect keys from turning the lock mechanisms.
Thousands of years after the great Roman Empire fell, the warded lock system remained in use, with the major improvement on the lock being complicating and making it harder for thieves to pick.

The Modern Keys

In 1848, Linus Yale Sr. introduced the first modern flat keys that were an adaptation of those used by ancient Egyptians. The key inserts into a pin tumbler lock that had pins of different alignments. His son, Linus Yale, Jr., later improved on the lock mechanisms and patented the new improvements. Though there have been alterations on Yale locks and other mechanical locks that appeared between then and now, the Yale locks still remain one of the most used keys today.
