Unlike what some auto owners think, programming a remote to your car isn’t a complicated procedure but a process you can have completed within minutes with the right information.
Before we move forward, note that depending on your car make, model, and year, how a key fob or remote key will be paired to your vehicle may be different. For instance, programming a remote key to some modern cars requires a special diagnostic device.
Often, you won’t have this diagnostic equipment as an auto owner but your dealership centers, auto parts stores, and of course, your local locksmiths in Tampa will have different diagnostic devices. You’re more likely to go the diagnostic tool programming route if your auto is a more recent model.
On the other hand, just by executing a series of operations through the electronic components in your vehicle, you can successfully pair your remote to your car. This auto remote programming procedure is referred to as onboard programming. Since diagnostic tool programming requires special tools, let’s focus on the do-it-yourself keyless programming.
If your vehicle requires special equipment or you cannot get the process done, call us at Tampa locksmith for immediate help.
How to program a key fob
This auto remote programming guide should work for most automobiles but has been tested to work for Toyota Camry key fob programming.
Make sure the driver’s door is open and unlocked while other doors remain shut. Put the key into the ignition and remove it two times, without turning the key and making sure this process happens within a span of 5 seconds.
Within a 40 seconds timeframe, close and open the driver’s side door twice.
Put the key into the ignition, without turning it. Now, within 40 seconds timeframe, close and open the driver’s side door twice.
Insert the key into the ignition and leave it. Close the driver’s door. Turn the key to the full on position without starting it and then back to the off position again. Take the key out of the ignition. Notice if the door lock automatically cycles at this point. If it does, that means the vehicle has entered programming mode. If no cycling takes place, you will have to restart the process from step 1.
If your vehicle enters the programming mode, press both the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for two seconds and let go of them. Then immediately press and hold the lock button for two seconds and release. The door lock should cycle once if the programming is successful.
Cycling twice means the remote wasn’t accepted. Restart the process all over again. If you are still unable to get the procedure right, chances are programming the key requires different instructions or special tools.
